By issuing demerit points for traffic tickets the Ontario Ministry of Transportation penalizes drivers who accumulate too many demerit points by removing their driving privileges, and right to drive.
Probationary drivers in Ontario if they receive one 4 point ticket will be suspended for 30 days, and not allowed to accumulate six demerit points. Fully licensed drivers may accumulate fifteen demerit points, but upon reaching nine demerit points the Ministry of Transportation will require the driver to attend their offices for a interview to see why the licence should not be suspended.
If the driver reaches
fifteen demerit points the Ministry of transportation will suspend the driver's licence for thirty days, and six months for any subsequent accumulations of demerit points
It is a common misconception that drivers "lose" demerit points due to convictions for traffic offences. In fact, a driver begins with zero demerit points and "accumulates demerit points".
