The Ministry of Transportation regulates drivers by adding a system of demerit points to most traffic tickets issued in Ontario. As well other US States and other Canadian Provinces have similiar systems in place. Drivers who recieve tickets, or demerit points in other justidictions many have the conviction added to their Ontario drivers licence. This is especially true for tickets from NY State and Quebec.
By issuing demerit points for traffic tickets the Ministry attempts to penalise drivers who accumlate too many demerit points by removing their driving privileges, and subsequently their right to drive.
Probationary drivers in Ontario are allowed to accumlate six demerit points, fully licenced drivers may accumlate fifteen demerit points. Upon reaching fifteen demerit points the Ministry of transportation will suspend the driver's licence for thirty days for a first violation, and up to six months for any subsequent accumulations of demerit points.
As well, fully licenced drivers may be required to attend at the offices of the Ministry for an interview upon the acculmation of nine demerit points.
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario may suspend a driver's licence as a result of a demerit point interview, failing to appear for the interview, or if the driver has not shown cause at the interview why the drivers licence should not be suspended.
Drivers convicted of certain driving-related offences have demerit points recorded on their records. It is a common misconception that drivers "lose" demerit points due to convictions for certain traffic offences. In fact, a driver begins with zero demerit points and accumulates demerit points for convictions.
