Penalties for Speeding Tickets
Speeding tickets have more penalties that the police and the prosecution not will tell you about.
These penalties can dramatically effect your right to drive and your insurance rates.
- Each speeding ticket has a fine attached to the ticket
- Any speeding ticket for more than 15km/h over the speed limit has demerit points
- If you are a G1 or G2 licence holder any speeding ticket with 4 points will mean that the Ministry will suspend your drivers license for 30 days.
- Speeding tickets for speeds over 50km/h have a possible 30 day suspension
- Insurance rates are based upon if you have received any speeding tickets
- If you receive nine or more demerit points the Ministry of Transportation will call you in to talk about suspending your drivers licence
Insurance Implications for Speeding Tickets
The actual cost of a speeding ticket in Ontario can be much more than the fine on the ticket. Insurance companies are always looking to assess what is their risk for any insurance policy holder.
Insurance companies are profit based businesses and are constantly looking at speeding tickets and any traffic ticket as an opportunity to increase the insurance premiums for the driver.
Although there may have been nothing dangerous about the speeding allegation, insurance companies look at all the risks factors involved for any driver to determine what rate they will charge for automobile insurance.
Insurance companies believe that if a person receives speeding tickets and traffic tickets that the chance of that person being involved in an accident or making a claim is higher than those who don’t.
