Police officers can issue careless driving tickets when;
- An accident has occured
- A private complaint is made about someones driving, and
- The officer observes a manner of driving that they believe is driving with out due care, or
- The officer observes the driver, driving without consideration for other drivers,
- The officer observes a number of driving infractions
Normally, a police officer may consider giving a careless driving ticket where they observe three (3) or more driving infractions, for example:
Instead of issuing three (3) tickets, e.g. speeding, following too closely, and improper lane changes the officer could issue one ticket for careless driving, covering all three offences in one ticket.
